- Gizmo Technologies Announces ShadowWriter™
- —Network Printer Sharing Software for Macintosh Computers—
-
- Fremont, CA—May 3, 1991—Gizmo Technologies announced their latest new product
- today: ShadowWriter, a low-cost software solution for sharing stand alone
- printers on the network. ShadowWriter installs in minutes to transform an
- inexpensive personal printer (e.g. the Personal LaserWriter LS) into a shared
- printer that can be used by any Macintosh on an AppleTalk-compatible network.
- ShadowWriter is Gizmo's second software product offering in a planned series of
- low-cost network "gizmos" for Macintosh Computers. The product will ship in
- June, 1991.
-
- "After a sneak preview of Apple's new high-quality, low-cost printers, we knew
- what the next Gizmo had to be..." explains Jim Hakanson, President of Gizmo
- Technologies. From their first look at the new printers, Gizmo engineers
- envisioned ShadowWriter: a software product that would turn a stand alone
- printer into one that many Macs could share—at an affordable price.
-
- A glance at their vision goes like this: Normally, one stand alone printer
- connects to one Macintosh (through the serial or SCSI port) allowing only that
- Macintosh to print. That's fine, unless there are other Macs in the office
- that could make use of the printer. Enter ShadowWriter—to make the stand alone
- printer available to all of the office Macs. "With ShadowWriter, we created an
- easy solution for anyone who wants to take advantage of these low-cost
- printers. Just start with a network of Macintoshes, connect a low-cost
- printer to one of the Macs, install the ShadowWriter software, and then all of
- the office Macs can use that printer just as they would any other network
- printer" adds Hakanson. And from then on, it's as easy as going to the Chooser
- to access the ShadowWriter printer in the same way you would select any network
- printer .
-
- In ShadowWriter, the Gizmo team has come up with another "networking for the
- rest of us" style of product. Besides being a great solution for those who
- want networked printing at a low cost, ShadowWriter also provides an affordable
- upgrade path for Mac owners who already have a stand alone printer, but who now
- want to share it with the rest of the Mac team in the office.
-
- A few of ShadowWriter's many features include the ability to:
-
- • Print on an inexpensive stand alone printer from any Mac on the network.
- • Access the ShadowWriter printer through the standard Chooser-level interface.
- • Work on your Mac while ShadowWriter prints in the background.
- • Automatically resolve font ID number conflicts while printing with
- ShadowWriter.
- • Maintain a log of all ShadowWriter printer usage (configurable feature).
- • Add password protection for ShadowWriter printer access (configurable
- feature).
-
- ShadowWriter works with the following Apple printers: the LaserWriter IISC,
- Personal LaserWriter SC, and the Personal LaserWriter LS. Support for
- additional Apple and third-party printers will be added in the future.
- ShadowWriter will ship in June1991 at $129 per package. Each package allows
- an unlimited number of office Macs to share a printer over the network.
